Total Solution

Total Design

It’s time we learnt more about total design and the man behind the concept, Ove Arup (1895-1988). There are few who have influenced the world of engineering in the 20th century as much as Ove Arup. The legacy he has left behind includes the Opera House and Centre Pompidou, not to mention the company Arup, responsible for projects including London’s Gherkin and the imminent Cross Rail currently being completed.

The Victoria & Albert Museum is showing Arup’s work for the first time at an exhibition currently on until Sunday 6th November. It highlights some of the unseen details of the core projects he worked on, including the building models, alongside some of the global firm Arup’s latest technologies and designs. It’s a chance to take a look at the ingenuity and creativity of this talented engineer.

When it comes to design, Arup focuses on bringing together different disciplines to achieve results:

“Why did we…embark upon comprehensive design embracing architecture as well as all branches of the relevant engineering disciplines? The answers can perhaps be abstracted from my many papers, published and unpublished, which deal with what could be called my ‘philosophy of design’ and the crucial role design plays in the affairs of mankind.” Ove Arup
