Something has been placed in the Winterfold (no, not Winterfell) Forest in Surrey to lure city dwellers out to the countryside for a change. We all know Surrey for its great real estate, Guildford and….good commuter links? But now just an hour from London Waterloo we can stop off at the local train station Gomshall and start walking along a beautiful scenic route in the heart of the forest to seek out a hidden gem. The London-based design practice, Giles Miller design, has installed a cedar-shingled pavilion atop one of the forest hills for individuals to stop, pause and admire the beautiful landscape.
A steel framework holds the oval structure together, attached to which are cedar wood shingles. Each shingle has been inscribed with messages and poems from local schools and was attached by hand to the structure. The design means each shingle overlaps with the last, creating a beautiful acorn effect across the structure. It blends perfectly with the surrounding landscape and the overall impact, both on the approach to and standing underneath the structure, is quite breath-taking.
It is the perfect example of a quality design that captures the nature of the forest it sits in and the landscape it looks out upon. We urge you to go and take a further look!
